OSLO, Norway - I like to cross the borders. I'd like to see the other side of the world and learn something, maybe a thing or two.
In Nepal, we always keep in mind the saying “Mother and the mother land are dearer than heaven and language and culture are the identity of the people.”
Many people from Nepal cross the border for different kinds of reasons - some for travel, while others to explore better opportunities.
Such community I experienced at the Norweigian University of Life and Sciences, about 30 km south of the capital city Oslo. A number of professional Nepalese take on their scholarship opportunities for higher education in order serve their mother land afterwards.
But these professionals are not by themselves. Due to long period of higher education in a foreign land, their children come with them and surprisingly are attending Norwegian school as well while waiting for their parents to finish school.
World study report shows that Children have the capacity to learn four languages at a time but it came as a surprise that these Nepali children have become more fluent in Norwegian language than their own native language. They were chatting in Norwegian even during their Nepali class.
These children are here for just a short term stay. Once their parents accomplished their study, they need to go back to their homeland and resume their study in Nepali school. The abrupt change could be very difficult for them.
To address the situation Nepali society in Ås (NEPSA) is running a Nepali school for the children once in a week, every Saturday) in the evening where they study their native language Nepali.
Being a journalist I feel that this effort is really appreciative and interesting story for me to share with the world.
